The trilogy does a better job of introducing the characters and concepts like ‘essence’ and ‘the Other Place’, but this prequel informs the reader more about the history and nature of magic, as well as the feats and trials of Bartimaeus, which are alluded to often in the trilogy without full background.

Also despite Stroud insisting that humans are considered ugly in the eyes of the summoned entities, Bartimaeus keeps on going on about how goddamn attractive his current appearance is. Now, if he is unable to display superhuman strength, the smart thing to do would be, picking the appearance of a stronger looking human. I loved the first three books of the series, but this one was terrible. It was like the author didn’t understand what made the first books so good, ealomon thought writing a bland fantasy tale with a toothless Bartimaeus was a good aniillo instead.

What made the first three books good was the unlikable characters. They all did things for their own motives, they were all mostly selfish, and it was really interesting to watch them fight it out. This book also completely destroys everything that happened I loved the first three books of the series, but this one was terrible.

This book also completely destroys everything that happened in Ptolemy’s Gate. Apparently all you have to do is be a pretty brainwashed slave girl and Bartimaeus will do anillk in his power to save you. No need for trust or any of the character development that came from his relationship with Ptolemy, he just becomes a spineless slave to save this girl for no reason.

I was so happy when I saw there was no sequel after Ptolemy’s Gate.

The ending was left a little open, and I was afraid the author would squeeze another sequel in and ruin it. I was intrigued that he wrote a prequel instead. Unfortunately, this one ruined it just as much as another sequel would have. How much slower could this thing go! Chapter 16 and still nothing important has happened. Ok this book eo stupid!

Skip to chapter 25 and read from there cuz everything before that has no meaning! In the book’s defense: I gave up on reading it, there is a small chance the end becomes amazing.
