Cambridge mathematician Andrew Wiles announced a solution for Fermat’s last theorem in but after a flaw was discovered in the proof, Wiles had to work for another year–he had already laboured in solitude for seven years–to establish that he had solved the year-old problem. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. I was really interested in reading this book after hearing about the problem in another book, and it definitely started out great as I was reading about Pythagoras and the secret brotherhood, Fermat, and of course Andrew Wiles.

However, somewhere during the middle to the end of the book, I found Wiles, as described by Singh, unlikeable.

I didn’t like the way he approached solving this problem, and it’s not in the technical sense, but the fact that he worked in secrecy. It was jus I was really interested in reading this book after hearing about the problem in another book, and it definitely started out great as I was reading about Pythagoras and the secret brotherhood, Fermat, and of course Andrew Wiles. It was justified because he needed total concentration, but near the end, Singh finally admitted it was also because of a desire for sole glory.

Please let me know if I read that correctly.

If it’s true then the spirit of collaboration was sacrificed for posllednja. I guess I am treating Fermat’s Last Theorem as a religious quest that only the humble can achieve and that is my own fault for seeing it that way, but I wish someone a little more humbler solved this puzzle. Speaking of solving the puzzle. I kept getting the feeling that Wiles didn’t really solve the puzzle.

He solved the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture which was a part of the logic behind solving Fermat’s Last Theorem. If Wiles gets the credit then so should Ken Ribet for figuring out another part of that logic.

As I understand it, until he showed up there was no good strategy for solving Fermat’s Last Theorem. Frey’s approach was basically used by Wiles.

I can’t imagine where Wiles would be without Frey. This book has been on my book shelve for over 10 years, I finally read it.

I’m a mathematician at heart, always ready for a riddle. I really can’t help it that I find this subject simply too boring to really enjoy. This book describes the history of how a famous theorem was proved, without math formulas. I live with a mathematician now – so had a go at this book. DOn’t like hero-worship in an author! Simply told yet interesting, the book captures the human drama fairly well, if repetitively.

Where it struggles is that it can only give a broad overview of the maths involved. Understandably, as the final paper by Andrew Wiles proving the theorem is over pages long, contains a number of brand new mathematical ideas, and is practically indecipherable to the lay reader Tough book to write about a very difficult subject. I enjoyed it, especially when the author found a common, understandable subject to explain parts of the problem.

I only gave the a rating of two stars because there were no such explanations for the problem with the proof. Yeah, yeah I know the math is that bizarre that there isn’t much to compare it to – however, that is what I would have liked.

La segunda mitad entra en tema y se deja leer aunque en verdad el trabajo de Wiles fue nuy aburrido: Ironic that I started reading this on the day that numeracy was in the news. The blurb said that you didn’t need to be good at maths to read it but some parts were totally beyond me – I’m not sure I really understood the whole ‘proof’ thing. At the start I thought it was going to be like one of ‘The Knowledge’ books but for adults.

Five out of ten. Follow an ancient problem through the minds of great’s like euclid, newton, fermat. I like math and even math books but couldn’t get into this. I kept thinking, “who cares? Teoream review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.
