But Saramago’s great blunder is not that he takes an intriguing idea and makes a joke out of it; it’s that he takes his joke and bludgeons it with verbose, rambling language. Do that, and you’re in for even bigger disappointments, the novel is horribly written; no character build up, juvenile dialogs, complete ignorance of politics and economy and a chattered storyline. I’m thinking of intwrmitencias of James Fa books.
