Review quote Anyone who is familar with Morten Lauridsen’s O magnum mysterium will recognise his voice in this setting of the words sung on Maundy Thursday. The piece opens with the plainsong sung by the men in unison. Lauridsen’s musical language relies much on repeated dissonances such as ninth and sevenths for it’s effect, along with a generally low tessitura the lowest basses frequently are called up to sing bottom Esand rich textures that are obtained by divisions of the vocal parts, particularly of the lower ones the basses are divided into three parts in some places.

The demands of this piece will be beyond the resources of many church choirs, but cathedral, college and chamber choirs should be able to manage it fairly easily. It makes a refreshing change from the Durufle Ubi Caritas. Church Music Quarterly, December Lauridsen takes a well known liturgy and gives it his own flavour in this paper bound single set, adding considerable drama.

As the piece moves from reflection to celebration, the volume and complexity grow, too. This is an excellent little piece for choirs generally, although churches and religious groups might adapt better to the content.
