The Physics II course explains the fundamental laws of classical electromagnetism, including the propagation of light considered as an electromagnetic wave.
The goal is the acquisition of the basic principles and of their physical meanings. The fundamental applications of each law are shown with the aim of providing the student with a method for the interpretation of the physical phenomena which are at the basis of many engineering problems. A good knowledge and mastery of the mathematical instruments learnt in the course of Mathematical Analysis I and II and of Geometry are required.
Electrostatics in vacuum is treated in the Physics I course and must be known at the beginning of the Physics II course.

This knowledge is fundamental for the comprehension of all the subjects that will be studied. Principle of conservation of charge. Force on electric charge moving in a magnetic field: Magnetic force on electric circuits.
Magnetic field produced by a closed current: Magnetic field produced by a circular loop. Magnetic torque and potential energy of a magnetic dipole. Self and mutual induction. Energy stored in a magnetic field. Magnetic field energy density. LC and LRC circuits. Fraunhofer diffraction by a single slit. Class exercises include simple problem solving activities, with strict connections to theoretical lectures. The procedure of exercise solution is aimed at developing specific analysis methodology and calculus techniques.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources. The textbook, chosen among the ones listed, will be recommended during the lectures: Voci ‘Elementi di Fisica, vol. The exam consists of two steps: The assessment of both the written and the oral part is based on marks ranging from 0 to The final mark takes into account both the written and oral scores. The written exam lasts two hours and is divided in two parts: The two parts are separately graded and the result is the sum of the two evaluations.

Candidates are not allowed to take in the exam room text-books or notes relevant to the course program. The use of electronic calculators is allowed provided these are cleared of all pre-stored programmes or information. Students are admitted to the oral exam if they correctly answer to 8 or more questions and if the total assessment of their written exam is 15 marks out of 30 or more.
The oral exam is mainly oriented to check whether a candidate has a sufficiently wide knowledge of the theory.
Students passing the written exam with 18 marks out of 30 or more can choose an abbreviated formula of the oral exam: Subject fundamentals The Physics II course explains the fundamental laws of classical electromagnetism, including the propagation of light considered as an electromagnetic wave.
